Dr. Lieping Chen is the United Technologies Corporation Professor in Cancer Research and Professor of Immunobiology, Dermatology, and Medical Oncology at Yale School of Medicine. His career spans academic positions at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Mayo Clinic, and Bristol-Myers Squibb Pharmaceutical Research Institute. Chen is renowned for discovering the PD-1/PD-L1 pathway in cancer immunotherapy, which Science magazine cited as the #1 breakthrough of 2013.
- Member of the National Academy of Sciences
- Fellow of the American Association for Cancer Research
- Director of the Chen Lab at Yale's West Campus Molecular Innovations Center
His research focuses on molecular pathways in T cell regulation, including the discovery of B7-H1 (PD-L1), 4-1BB agonists, and other immune checkpoint molecules like B7-H2, B7-H3, VISTA, and Siglec-15. These findings have led to clinical trials for cancer, autoimmune diseases, and inflammation treatments.
Recent publications highlight his work in spatial transcriptomics for tumor microenvironment analysis, sex-based differences in cancer biomarkers, and mechanisms of immune evasion in hematologic malignancies. His lab actively trains postdoctoral researchers through the Immunobiology Graduate Program at Yale.
- Fierce 50 Breakthroughs Award (2023)
- Richard V. Smalley MD Memorial Award (2020)
- Academician, Academia Sinica (2018)
- Giants of Cancer Care Award (2018)
Dr. Chen's laboratory alumni include faculty members at institutions like Vanderbilt University, Ohio State University, and the University of Navarra, demonstrating his impact on global cancer immunology research.
