Haidong Dong, M.D., Ph.D., is a Professor of Immunology at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science, with primary and joint appointments in the Department of Urology and Department of Immunology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He is a leading researcher in cancer immunology and immunotherapy, known for co-discovering B7-H1 (PD-L1) and pioneering the concept of B7-H1 blockade therapy.
- Ph.D. in Tumor Immunology, Dalian Medical University (1994)
- Clinical Fellowship in Tumor Immunology and Immunotherapy, Osaka University School of Medicine (1993)
- Postdoctoral Fellowships at Peking University, RIKEN, and Mayo Clinic
- Research Fellowship in Immunology, Mayo Clinic (2002)
Dr. Dong's research centers on cancer immune evasion, immune checkpoint inhibitors, combination therapies, and the tumor-intrinsic functions of PD-L1. His lab seeks to identify biomarkers for immunotherapy response, overcome therapy resistance, and develop rational combination regimens. His work spans kidney, bladder, prostate, breast cancers, melanoma, and leukemia, with translational impact across solid tumors.
His recent publications reveal a strong focus on PD-L1 biology, exosomal immune suppression, T cell regulation, and the tumor microenvironment. The research trends include single-cell analysis, immune checkpoint mechanisms, and novel imaging and therapeutic strategies.
- Iris and Winston Clement Professor of Research (2022)
- Outstanding Mentor Award, Mayo Clinic (2021)
- AAI Junior Faculty Travel Award (2007)
- Faculty Transition Research (FUTR) Award (2006)
- New Investigator Award, Federation of Immunological Societies of Asia-Oceania (1996)
- Incitement Award, Japanese Society of Biological Response Modifiers (1993)
Dr. Dong has served as Principal Investigator on multiple NIH-funded grants, including projects on PD-L1 dual functions, B7-H1 in T cell responses, and immune coregulators in renal cell carcinoma. He collaborates with leading oncologists and immunologists across Mayo Clinic. His lab contributes to the Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Center for Individualized Medicine. He is an active member of the Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer, American Association of Immunologists, and American Association for Cancer Research.
