Liborius Olaf Lumma is a Professor of Liturgical Studies at the University of Innsbruck’s Catholic Theological Faculty, serving as Dean of Studies since 2021. His academic journey includes a Dr. Theologie from the University of Innsbruck (2006), Habilitation (2015), and appointment to a professorship in 2024. He specializes in liturgical history, ecumenism, and sacramental theology, with extensive research on Gregorian chant, liturgical rituals, and interfaith dialogue.
Education: Studied at Westfälischen Wilhelms-Universität Münster, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, and Hochschule für Philosophie SJ München (1995–2002). Habilitation on the liturgy of Compline (2015).
Research focuses include liturgical practices across cultures, ecumenical liturgical collaboration, and historical theology. He leads the Research Center “Synagoge und Kirchen” (2016–2021) and edited major works like Cult – Magic – Ritual (2025). Active in academic governance, he chairs the Catholic Theological Faculty’s curriculum committee and represents the faculty in university-wide initiatives.
Publications span liturgical guides (Crash Course in Liturgy), scholarly monographs on liturgical practices, and over 150 articles. Engaged in ecumenical and interfaith initiatives, including roles in the Austrian Bishops’ Conference and the European Academy of Religion and Society (EARS). Teaching includes courses on liturgical theology and ecumenical liturgy at institutions like the Philosophical-Theological College of Brixen.
