Reinhard Meßner is a full professor of Liturgical Studies at the University of Innsbruck's Institute for Biblical Studies and Historical Theology. He has held this position since 1996 and is an Ordinarius (O. Univ.-Prof.). He completed his theological studies and doctorate at the Catholic Theological Faculty in Graz (1987), was ordained as a priest in 1988, and habilitated in Liturgical Studies at Innsbruck in 1994.
His research focuses include the history of Christian worship in late antiquity, Eucharistic theology, liturgical change in antiquity and the Middle Ages, Reformation studies, and the theological significance of liturgical tradition. He co-edits the Church Worship handbook series and Austrian Studies of Liturgy and Sacramental Theology.
Prof. Meßner is actively involved in theological institutions, including the Abt-Herwegen-Institute (Maria Laach), the Austrian Liturgical Commission, and the International Association of Liturgical Commissions in German-speaking regions.
