Professor Andreas Odenthal is a theologian and liturgical studies scholar at the University of Bonn's Faculty of Catholic Theology. He serves as a Catholic university preacher and has been Dean of the Faculty since the 2023 summer semester.
- Education: Theology, Philosophy, and German studies at Bonn and Freiburg universities, with habilitation in liturgical studies (2002)
- Academic appointments: Professor of Liturgical Studies at Fulda (2002), Tübingen (2006), and Bonn (2018)
- Psychoanalytic training: Cultural psychoanalyst (GPP) since 1995
His research focuses on medieval liturgy, ritual theory through "rituelle Erfahrung" (ritual experience) model, and ecumenical liturgical studies with emphasis on Lutheran hours liturgy. He directs DFG project 433518061 on Lutheran liturgical chant.
Odenthal's affiliations include memberships in the Psychoanalytisches Seminar Düsseldorf, Arbeitsgemeinschaft katholischer Liturgikdozentinnen und -dozenten (AKL), and Bonner Mittelalter-Zentrum (BMZ). He combines theological and psychoanalytic approaches in analyzing worship as symbolic events.
