He joined the university in 2001 after receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Würzburg and conducting postdoctoral research at UCLA and Dartmouth Medical School.
His research focuses on Cell Biology, particularly mechanisms of lysosomal homeostasis, host-pathogen interactions, and membrane trafficking dynamics. He has led multiple DFG-funded initiatives including:
- Mechanisms of lysosomal homeostasis
- Intracellular compartments in host-pathogen interactions
- Cell-autonomous immunity
Notable scientific honors include:
- Young Investigator Award (American Society for Microbiology, 1998)
- Adolf-Butenandt-Habilitation Award (1998)
