Dr. Levi Durbidge is a Senior Lecturer in World Languages at the University of the Sunshine Coast (UniSC), within the School of Business and Creative Industries. He holds a PhD from Monash University, a Master of Applied Linguistics with Honors (TESOL) from the University of New England, and a BInfoSc (Honors) from the University of Newcastle. His research focuses on transnational mobility, language learning, digital technology, and study abroad contexts, particularly involving Japanese learners. Dr. Durbidge has received notable awards, including the 2021 Michael Clyne Prize for his thesis on immigrant bilingualism and the 2022 Humanities Travelling Fellowship.
His teaching areas include Japanese, Languages and Linguistics, and English as an Additional Language. Professional memberships span organizations like the Australian Association of Applied Linguists (AALA) and the Japanese Studies Association of Australia (JSAA). Dr. Durbidge's work bridges sociolinguistics, technology-mediated learning, and global educational trends, with a focus on how digital tools shape language acquisition and cultural identity in transnational settings.
Key research interests include the role of social media in language learning, the impact of study abroad programs on multilingual identities, and the intersection of technology and pedagogy. His recent projects explore post-pandemic educational decisions and the dynamics of translocal communities. Dr. Durbidge’s publications span peer-reviewed journals and edited volumes, emphasizing innovative methodologies in applied linguistics and study abroad research.
