Dr. Tomoe Nishio is an Associate Professor of Japanese and Program Director of UNG Summer: Japanese Language and Culture at the University of North Georgia (UNG), serving since 2021. She joined UNG as an Assistant Professor in 2016, previously holding roles at institutions like the University of Georgia and Southern Illinois University. Her expertise spans second language acquisition, applied linguistics, and Japanese pedagogy. She also serves as an Adjunct Instructor at Nanzan University in Japan since 2017.
Dr. Nishio holds a Ph.D. in Linguistics (University of Georgia, 2015), an M.A. in Linguistic Anthropology (Southern Illinois University, 2011), and an M.A. in TESOL (Southern Illinois University, 2008). Her research focuses on language learning technologies, intercultural communication, and cultural dimensions in language education.
She teaches a range of Japanese language courses (elementary to advanced levels) and coordinates study abroad programs. Her publications emphasize telecollaboration, cross-cultural exchange, and motivational factors in language learning. She has contributed to journals like Journal of Virtual Exchange, Language Learning & Technology, and CALICO Journal.
Dr. Nishio’s work integrates technology and cultural studies to enhance language pedagogy, reflecting her commitment to global educational collaborations.
