Lawrence Bird is a Lecturer in the Department of Architecture at the University of Manitoba. He holds a Ph.D. in History & Theory of Architecture from McGill University, alongside degrees in City Design & Social Sciences (M.Sc., London) and Architecture (B.Arch., B.Sc. Arch., McGill). His professional qualifications include MAA, MRAIC, MCIP, MPPI, RPP, and LEED.GA.
His research and practice bridge architecture, urban design, and media art. Key projects include leadership roles at Sputnik Architecture inc. and pico ARCHITECTURE inc., involvement with the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, and urban design advisory roles. His media art installations, such as Cargo (2024) and Dominion (2024), explore themes of global shipping, digital landscapes, and urban disorientation. He has published extensively, including the edited volume Warming Huts (2021) and articles in Leonardo, Canadian Architect, and other journals.
His creative work has been exhibited globally, such as at the International Symposium on Electronic Art (ISEA) and Winnipeg Design Festival. He is a peer reviewer for Leonardo and actively contributes to media art forums. Bird’s interdisciplinary focus on image ecologies, material politics, and urban sustainability reflects his commitment to reimagining built environments through critical and artistic lenses.
