Pierre Plourde is a Professor at the University of Manitoba’s Max Rady College of Medicine, holding cross-appointments in the Departments of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, and Community Health Sciences. He also serves as a Professor at Université Lumière in Haiti. His roles include Co-director of the Undergraduate Medical Education (UGME) Program in the Department of Community Health Sciences and Medical Director for multiple public health initiatives, including the Integrated Tuberculosis Services and the Canadian Malaria Network. He has extensive leadership experience in infection control, travel medicine, and global health.
Education: Dr. Plourde earned his Doctor of Medicine (MD) from the University of Ottawa (1983), graduating Cum Laude.
Research & Teaching: His research focuses on infectious diseases, public health, and medical education. He emphasizes translating complex medical concepts into practical, student-centered learning. His teaching philosophy prioritizes simplicity, utility, and mutual respect between educators and learners.
Awards: He has received numerous accolades, including the 2023 Exceptional Leadership Award from the University of Ottawa and the Moira Walker Memorial Award for International Service (2021). He is a frequent recipient of the Jim Parker Educator of the Year Award for both undergraduate and post-graduate medical education.
Leadership & Grants: Dr. Plourde has led programs such as the GeoSentinel Travel Medicine Surveillance Network, the Healthy Sexuality and Harm Reduction Services, and the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority’s Communicable Diseases Unit. He has secured grants for initiatives in infection prevention, tuberculosis control, and global health partnerships.
Labs & Teams: He collaborates with teams at the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, the University of Manitoba’s UGME office, and international networks like GeoSentinel and the Canadian Malaria Network. His work bridges clinical practice, education, and public health policy.
