Davidson Hamer is a Professor of Global Health and Medicine at Boston University, affiliated with the Institute for Global Sustainability (IGS). He holds dual appointments in the School of Public Health and the Aram V. Chobanian & Edward Avedisian School of Medicine. As a medical epidemiologist and infectious disease specialist, his work focuses on emerging diseases, climate change impacts on health, tropical medicine, travel medicine, infection control, and antimicrobial resistance.
Dr. Hamer leads the BU COVID-19 Surveillance and Response Team and serves as the Surveillance Lead for GeoSentinel, a global network tracking infectious diseases via travelers' health data. He is Director of the Travel Clinic at Boston Medical Center and a faculty member at the National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratory (NEIDL).
His research spans climate-driven disease patterns, maternal-child health in low-resource settings, and antibiotic resistance. Notable projects include studies on neonatal microbiota in Bangladesh and dengue outbreak predictions using ocean temperature data. His GeoSentinel work has informed global health policies on emerging pathogens like Monkeypox and SARS-CoV-2 variants.
Dr. Hamer’s academic contributions include over 200 peer-reviewed articles, emphasizing travel medicine trends, fungal infections in HIV patients, and infection prevention strategies in healthcare settings. His educational background includes an MD from the University of Vermont College of Medicine and a BA from Amherst College.
