Nicholas A. Crossland is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine at Boston University's Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine and an Investigator at the National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories (NEIDL). He holds dual appointments as an Assistant Professor of Pathology and Virology, Immunology & Microbiology. Dr. Crossland specializes in veterinary anatomic pathology and focuses on understanding viral-host interactions of highly pathogenic microbes. His research integrates classical pathology with advanced technologies such as spatial transcriptomics and quantitative image analysis to identify therapeutic targets and evaluate medical countermeasures.
Education: D.V.M. and B.S. from Kansas State University, Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists.
Research interests include viral pathogenesis, pre-clinical model validation, and translational research to combat emerging pathogens. His lab employs cutting-edge techniques like multispectral imaging, spatial transcriptomics, and automated immunohistochemistry to study diseases such as tuberculosis, influenza, and Ebola virus infections.
Key grants include NIH funding for preclinical models of infectious diseases and NEIDL operations. He mentors graduate students (MS/PhD) in translational research and collaborates widely across BU's medical campus.
Laboratory: Directs the NEIDL Comparative Pathology Laboratory (NCPL), which serves as a bridge between academic and industrial research in infectious disease challenges.
