Lauren Bavis is a Professor of Practice in the Magazine, News and Digital Journalism program at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, Syracuse University. She joined the Newhouse School in Fall 2023 as a faculty fellow, bringing extensive professional experience in journalism to her academic role.
Professor Bavis teaches classes in news writing, reporting and multimedia projects. Her professional background includes significant experience in investigative journalism and health reporting, with expertise spanning digital media leadership and podcast production.
Her work has been recognized with several prestigious awards:
- Public Media Journalists Association recognition
- Hoosier State Press Association recognition
- Indiana Associated Press Media Editors recognition
- Indiana's Journalists of the Year 2019 (as part of her team at Side Effects)
Professor Bavis holds a B.S. in mass communication from Towson University and has built a distinguished career spanning health reporting, investigative journalism, and digital media leadership. At Side Effects Public Media, she co-created and co-hosted the nationally distributed investigative podcast series 'Sick,' examining healthcare system failures, and is currently working on a book based on her reporting.
