Jodi Upton is the Knight Chair in Data and Explanatory Journalism at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, Syracuse University. She holds a Professor title in the Magazine, News and Digital Journalism department. With 20+ years of experience, she previously served as a senior database editor at USA Today, leading a team of six in data-driven investigations. Her work has addressed topics like veterans’ healthcare, economic trends, and collegiate sports compensation.
Upton’s research interests focus on leveraging data to enhance journalistic storytelling, particularly in explanatory and investigative reporting. Her team’s projects have won multiple national awards, including IRE Phillip Meyer Awards and the World Media Summit Innovation Award. She is also a past trainer and regular speaker with Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE).
