Joel Kaplan is a Professor of Magazine, News and Digital Journalism and Associate Dean for Graduate Programs at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, Syracuse University. He is a former investigative journalist with experience at The Chicago Tribune and The Tennessean, where he covered city hall and state legislature. His career highlights include a 1986 Pulitzer Prize finalist nomination for an investigative series on U.S. Rep. Bill Boner. Kaplan is co-author of the book *Murder of Innocence: The Tragic Life and Final Rampage of Laurie Dann* (1991), later adapted into a CBS film.
Education includes a master’s in journalism from the University of Illinois, a master’s in the study of law from Yale Law School (as a Journalism Fellow), and a Nieman Fellowship at Harvard University. He has served as ombudsman for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, ensuring media integrity, and held roles with Investigative Reporters and Editors (IREE), including board member and treasurer.
Research interests focus on investigative journalism ethics, media accountability, and legal dimensions of reporting. His work bridges traditional journalism practices with contemporary challenges in digital media. Awards include recognition for investigative reporting and prestigious fellowships in journalism and law.
