Laura Van Metre Baum, MD, MPH, is an Assistant Professor of Medicine (Medical Oncology) at Yale School of Medicine. She specializes in gastrointestinal oncology and palliative care, treating patients at the Center for Gastrointestinal Cancers at Smilow Cancer Hospital and Yale Cancer Center, as well as the Smilow Cancer Hospital Palliative Care Program. Her research focuses on gastrointestinal cancers, palliative care, health services, opioid use in cancer, and psychosocial outcomes in young adult cancer patients.
Dr. Baum earned her MD from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine (2010), a BA in Spanish, Economics, and Latin American Studies from the University of Texas (2006), and an MPH in Epidemiology from Vanderbilt University (2021). She completed residency at NYU Langone Medical Center (2013) and fellowships in Hematology/Oncology at Vanderbilt (2021) and Hospice and Palliative Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital (2017).
Her current clinical trials include studies on adjuvant chemotherapy for colorectal cancer, pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors, and novel therapies for solid tumors. She also investigates perioperative chemotherapy for pancreatic cancer and the safety of experimental drugs like ABBV-151.
Dr. Baum emphasizes patient-centered care, advocating for psychosocial support and holistic cancer management. She is affiliated with multiple programs including the Hepatic Arterial Infusion Program, Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy Program, and Yale Cancer Center.
