Laura S. Promer is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Samford University’s School of Health Professions. She serves as Director of Undergraduate Studies and advisor for the National Student Speech-Language-Hearing Association (NSSLHA) chapter. Her expertise focuses on language-based reading disorders, dyslexia intervention, and cultural/linguistic diversity in education.
Education: MS in Communication Disorders (University of Alabama), BS in Education (University of Tennessee-Knoxville). She maintains certifications as a CCC-SLP (ASHA), C-SLDI (International Dyslexia Association), and AOGPE (Academy of Orton Gillingham).
Research interests include co-occurring speech/language and reading/writing disorders, structured literacy pedagogy, and bilingual assessment strategies. Publications emphasize multidisciplinary approaches to literacy challenges in school-age populations.
Awards include the 2023 School of Health Professions Service Award and recognition on the Southern Conference’s All-SoCon Faculty/Staff Team. She founded Communication and Reading Therapies (2001), a private practice specializing in language/reading disorder evaluations and treatments.
Teaches courses in structured literacy (undergraduate/graduate), clinical methods, and senior seminar. Active in professional leadership roles including ASHA continuing education administration and expert witness engagements.
