Professor Laura Bowater MBE is the Head of Peninsula Medical School at the University of Plymouth and holds a Non-Executive Director role at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust. Previously, she served as Professor of Microbiology Education and Engagement at Norwich Medical School (University of East Anglia), Course Director for Medicine with a Gateway Year Programme, and Associate Pro Vice Chancellor for Innovation at UEA. She also held a Non-Executive Director position at James Paget University Hospital.
Her research focuses on public engagement in science, antibiotic resistance, and infection control. She actively advocates for women in STEM and has contributed to antimicrobial resistance initiatives through public outreach. In 2020, she received an MBE for her contributions to research and education in antimicrobial resistance.
Teaching responsibilities include modules on Microbiology and Antimicrobial Resistance, Introduction to Public Health, and the History of the NHS. She has supervised at least one research student, Eleanor Drury, whose work explored antibiotic discovery via citizen science (2020).
