Ben Evans is a Lecturer in Medical Microbiology at the University of East Anglia's Norwich Medical School. He holds roles as Director of Postgraduate Research and chairs the Biological Hazards and Genetic Modification Review Committee. His career includes academic positions at Anglia Ruskin University and research posts at the Universities of Manchester and Liverpool.
Evans earned a BSc in Microbiology and Infection (2005) and a PhD in Medical Microbiology (2009) from the University of Edinburgh, focusing on OXA-51-like β-lactamases in Acinetobacter baumannii.
His research investigates antibiotic resistance mechanisms, particularly in Acinetobacter baumannii and the impact of non-antibiotic drugs like chemotherapy agents on cross-resistance. Key areas include bacterial evolution, drug resistance transmission, and genomic analysis of pathogens. He leads projects funded by the Wellcome Trust, Newton Fund, and BBSRC.
Teaching focuses on medical microbiology, genetics, and immunology at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including supervision of MSc and MRes students. Administrative roles include overseeing the MRC Antimicrobial Research Training program and managing microbiological safety protocols at UEA.
Collaborations span international institutions, addressing global health challenges such as antibiotic stewardship and zoonotic pathogen dynamics. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and innovation.
