Laura A. Lloyd serves as a Lecturer in the Department of Music, Theatre and Dance at Christopher Newport University, teaching diverse courses including Ballet, Jazz, Musical Theatre Dance Styles, Tap, Acting, Actor's Voice, Actor's Body, Advanced Acting, History of Musical Theatre, and Choreography. Her role bridges professional performance experience with academic instruction in performing arts.
Her educational foundation includes:
- BA in Theatre from Angelo State University (San Angelo, TX), with double major in Theatre and English
- MFA in Musical Theatre from Western Illinois University, where she was also a member of the University Dance Company
Lloyd's research focuses on underexplored areas of Dance in Musical Theatre, where she notes scarce academic resources. She is actively developing an online resource for Broadway Tap while advancing her certification in Elemental Body Alignment (EBA). Her scholarly work addresses critical gaps in dance pedagogy and historical documentation within musical theatre training, emphasizing practical application for contemporary performers.
Her 2023 conference presentation at the Musical Theater Educators Alliance Annual Conference in New York City examined systemic issues in audition practices, reflecting her commitment to equity in performing arts education. This work represents emerging scholarship in a specialized niche with limited existing literature.
With nine years of high school theatre and dance instruction in Newport News Public Schools followed by transition to university teaching, Lloyd brings extensive practical mentorship experience. Her career trajectory—from professional performer at regional theatres and Busch Gardens to educator—provides students with industry-relevant training grounded in real-world performance contexts.
