Lars Breuls is a Professor of Penology at the Faculty of Law and Criminology at Vrije Universiteit Brussel. He holds a Ph.D. from the Research Foundation - Flanders (FWO), focusing on ethnographic research in immigration detention in Belgium and the Netherlands. His expertise includes immigration control practices, penal decision-making, and prison sentence implementation.
Education: Ph.D. Fellowship (FWO, 2016–2020), successfully defended his Ph.D. on immigration detention practices in 2020. Master's thesis on early release procedures in correctional institutions (2015).
Research Interests
His work centers on administrative and penal decision-making processes, immigration detention, deportation practices, and the intersection of migration policy with criminal justice systems. He emphasizes ethnographic methodologies to study bureaucratic practices and institutional dynamics.
