Marijke Van Buggenhout is a postdoctoral researcher at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), affiliated with the Brussels Interdisciplinary Research centre on Migration and Minorities (BIRMM) and the Voicing Youth research collective. She also serves as a temporary replacement lecturer (ZAP) in Crime & Society and Criminology.
Her educational background includes a Master's thesis on street children in Durban (2015) and a PhD dissertation completed in 2024 analyzing children's experiences within the Belgian asylum procedure through multi-voiced methodologies.
Her research centers on Migration and Asylum Studies, Criminology, and Children's Rights, with innovative focus on qualitative and performative approaches to amplify youth perspectives. She investigates intersections of migration, crime, and justice, particularly regarding young asylum seekers in Belgium, Greece, and Syria.
Recent publications (2024-2025) demonstrate cohesive emphasis on children's rights in asylum contexts using narrative and participatory methods. Her work bridges criminology, migration studies, and human rights, revealing systemic challenges in youth migration pathways while highlighting resilience through creative storytelling.

Marijke actively contributes to the Brussels Interdisciplinary Research centre on Migration and Minorities (BIRMM) and Voicing Youth collective, which develop community-engaged methodologies to empower marginalized youth through co-created knowledge production and policy advocacy.
