Dr. Larry Patriquin is a retired full-time faculty member in the Department of Social Welfare and Social Development at Nipissing University's Faculty of Arts and Science. He holds a PhD in Social and Political Thought from York University, alongside earlier degrees from St. Francis Xavier and Carleton Universities.
His research focuses on capitalism's theoretical and historical dimensions, poverty dynamics, and the evolution of the welfare state. Key areas include democracy's relationship with social rights, egalitarian societal pathways, and historical analyses of agrarian capitalism's impact on social welfare systems. His work bridges scholarly rigor with accessible public discourse.
Dr. Patriquin's publications include seminal books such as Economic Equality and Direct Democracy in Ancient Athens (2015) and Permanent Citizens’ Assemblies (2020), which propose innovative models for democratic deliberation. His research emphasizes both Canadian and global contexts, spanning ancient to contemporary eras.
Current research involves exploring the intersection of democracy and social rights through an upcoming book project. Despite retirement, his scholarly contributions continue to influence debates in political theory, historical sociology, and social policy.
