Andrea Chandler is a Professor in Carleton University's Department of Political Science, specializing in Russian/postcommunist politics, gender studies, and social policy reform. She holds a PhD from Columbia University and has twice received SSHRC research grants.
Her research examines democratization processes in Eastern Europe, gender-political intersections, human rights frameworks, and welfare state transformations. Core themes include the politics of social policy reform in transitional societies and gender dynamics in post-Soviet states.
Publications span Cold War diplomacy, contemporary Russian legislation, populist social policies, and territorial conflicts. Recent books analyze Canada-Eastern Europe relations and gender-policy interactions in Russia. Works combine historical analysis with contemporary policy evaluation.
Awarded the 2017 Carleton Research Achievement Award and DAAD fellowship for Berlin-based Cold War research, she currently investigates democracy promotion strategies during the Cold War era. Teaching covers European politics and comparative democratization.
