Erica Fraser is a Professor in the Department of History at Queen's University, specializing in Russian and Soviet history with a focus on gender, military cultures, and Cold War societies. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and has published extensively on topics such as postwar Soviet masculinity, Soviet celebrity culture, and the intersection of sports and politics. Her research projects include analyzing women’s hockey in the Soviet Union and exploring representations of Eastern Europe in modern media. Fraser supervises graduate students in areas such as gender history, Cold War societies, and sports history. She also contributes to public scholarship through podcasts and op-eds on contemporary issues like martial masculinities in Ukraine and Russia.
Her most notable work, Military Masculinity and Postwar Recovery in the Soviet Union (2019), examines how Soviet military culture reshaped masculine identity after WWII. Current projects include Soviet Hockey Stories, which uses hockey as a lens to study Soviet cultural narratives. Fraser has presented at international conferences and co-edited special issues on Russian history in film and television.
