Matthew E. Lenoe is a Professor of History and Graduate Career Advisor at the University of Rochester, School of Arts & Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. in Russian/Soviet history from the University of Chicago (1997). Prior to joining Rochester in 2006, he held positions at the University of Arkansas/Little Rock, Assumption College, and served as a visiting assistant professor at Harvard University. His research focuses on Russian/Soviet history, Stalinist culture, mass media, Soviet soldiers in WWII, Russia in East Asia, and global Cold War dynamics. He is currently completing a book on the emotions and daily experiences of Red Army soldiers during WWII's early years.
Lenoe supervises graduate fields including Russian/Soviet history, gender history in the USSR, Cold War studies, comparative authoritarianism, and the Eastern Front in WWII. He teaches courses such as HIST 131-133 (Russian History surveys), HIST 200/208/332W (focused on revolutions, the Eastern Front, and Stalinism), and HIST 238W/239W (Ukraine/Russia history and totalitarianism). His work emphasizes archival research, particularly documents from Soviet-era newspapers and state records, to explore themes of propaganda, surveillance, and everyday life under authoritarian systems.
