David L. Hoffmann is a Professor of History at The Ohio State University's College of Arts and Sciences. His expertise spans Russian and Soviet history, with a focus on Stalinism, gender, war memory, and cultural norms. He holds a B.A. from Lawrence University (1983), and M.A. and Ph.D. from Columbia University (1986, 1990).
His research emphasizes the political, social, and cultural dimensions of Stalinism, including state practices, ideological campaigns, and societal responses. Notable works include The Stalinist Era (2018) and Cultivating the Masses (2011), which explore Soviet modernity and governance. He recently received a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship (2022) and is currently authoring Women and Gender in Soviet History and World War II Memory in the Soviet Union and Putin’s Russia.
Key areas of research include Soviet official culture, WWII memory, and the intersection of gender and power. His publications blend historiography with interdisciplinary analysis, offering critical insights into Soviet identity, propaganda, and state-society relations.
