Lance Smith is a Professor in the Department of Counseling, Human Development and Family Science at the University of Vermont’s College of Education and Social Services. His work centers on equity-centered, critically conscious, intersectional, and liberatory approaches to counseling, supervision, and education reform. He co-founded Project CORE, a multidisciplinary research team focused on restorative practices and youth participatory action research (YPAR).

Smith’s research explores restorative practices as a strategy to disrupt the school-to-prison pipeline, develop critical consciousness measurement tools, and examine implicit bias in counseling. His work integrates community-based participatory research with social justice frameworks to address systemic inequities in education and mental health systems.
Recent publications focus on restorative practices implementation, YPAR pedagogies, and marginalized student experiences, including studies on genderqueer youth, students with disabilities, and racial/sexual orientation disparities in school discipline. His awards include the 2021 AERA Impact Award and multiple teaching recognitions at the University of Vermont.

As co-founder of Project CORE, Smith leads a multidisciplinary team conducting field studies on restorative practices and YPAR. His prior experience includes clinical mental health counseling in upstate New York and school counseling with the Tikiamu people of Northern Alaska.
