Kathryn J. Fox served as a Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Vermont (UVM) from 1994 until her retirement in May 2024. She held a Ph.D. and Master’s degree in Sociology from the University of California, Berkeley, where she worked with scholars such as David Matza and Michael Burawoy, focusing on deviance studies and qualitative methods.
Her research expertise centers on prison conditions, justice reform, and applied research. She co-led the Justice Research Initiative (JRI) with Professor Abby Crocker, partnering with the Vermont Department of Corrections and the Urban Institute’s Prison Research Innovation Network (PRIN). She also contributed to the National Center on Restorative Justice (NCRJ), funded by the Bureau of Justice Assistance, promoting restorative justice practices nationwide.
Dr. Fox received the Kroepsch-Maurice Excellence in Teaching Award in 1999, recognizing her innovative approaches to education. She designed community-engaged courses, including collaborations with incarcerated individuals, and founded the UVM Liberal Arts in Prison Program (LAPP) in 2017, which she directed until retirement. Her work emphasized participatory research and reintegration strategies, often involving incarcerated populations in research and education.
Her career included advising the SGA club The Prison Partnership and fostering partnerships between UVM students and correctional facilities. Beyond academia, she advocated for criminal justice reform through research and policy engagement.
