Lance Ferris is a Full Professor of Organizational Behavior/Human Resources at the Telfer School of Management, University of Ottawa. He holds the Telfer Research Professorship of Work Motivation. Previously, he served as Assistant Professor at Singapore Management University, and Associate Professor at Pennsylvania State University and Michigan State University.
Education: B.A. (Hon.) from McMaster University, M.A.Sc. and Ph.D. from the University of Waterloo.
His research focuses on organizational behavior, leadership, workplace aggression, self-control, and ethical leadership. Key areas include the dynamics of workplace voice, managerial endorsement effects, decision-making autonomy, and gender disparities in workplace pride displays. He has explored topics like the psychological impact of abusive supervision, moral licensing, and the role of mindfulness in regulating aggression.
His work appears in top journals such as Journal of Applied Psychology, Academy of Management Journal, and Organization Science. He has led SSHRC-funded research projects, including “Moral Motivation(s)” and studies on workplace deviance and ethical leadership.
Ferris has held editorial roles at Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes and the Academy of Management Review. His book The Self at Work: Fundamental Theory and Research (Routledge, 2018) examines self-enhancement and self-control in organizational settings.
