Dr. Kushwanth Koya is a Lecturer in Information Management at the University of Sheffield's School of Information, Journalism and Communication since 2022. Previously, he served as a Senior Lecturer and Research Lead at Sheffield Hallam University. He holds a PhD in Information Framework Development from Northumbria University (2014), alongside advanced qualifications in teaching and learning. His research focuses on societal information needs, digital technologies, and their intersections with sustainability, healthcare, and education.
Education Background: BEng (Anna University, India), MSc (Northumbria University), PhD (Northumbria University), PGCLTHE (Sheffield Hallam University), and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA).
Research Interests: Current projects include studying information needs of young informal carers (collaborating with Strathclyde and Leeds Beckett), microblogging dynamics of NHS workers during COVID-19 (with Northumbria/De Montfort/Suffolk), and machine learning adoption in aerospace manufacturing. Past work includes GDPR analysis in student data usage, UN SDG achievement through cultural heritage information practices, and a JISC-funded reading list prototype for libraries.
Teaching: Leads modules on data-driven organizations and information systems across all academic levels. University Roles: Student Mentor and Exams Officer.
Collaborations: Active in interdisciplinary projects with NHS workers, aerospace industry partners, and former students Rob Frear and Salime Mascarenhas. His work bridges theory and practice in information systems, leadership, and educational technology.
