Professor Robert Copeland is a Professor of Physical Activity and Health at Sheffield Hallam University and Director of the Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre (AWRC). He previously led the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine (NCSEM) in Sheffield from 2012 to 2022. His work focuses on designing behavior change interventions to improve public health through physical activity, particularly in chronic disease prevention and workforce wellness.
His research interests include physical activity promotion, obesity management, and the integration of healthcare systems with leisure facilities. He has led major projects such as the 'Active Together' cancer rehabilitation service and evaluations of whole-system approaches to physical activity (e.g., in Essex and Greater Manchester). His work has generated over £12.5 million in grants and influenced national policies like Sheffield's 'Move More' strategy.
Key achievements include co-developing the Active 10 app, evaluating NHS workforce wellness programs, and advancing prehabilitation guidelines for cancer patients. His articles span behavioral medicine, chronic disease management, and public health systems. He advises national bodies like the All Party Parliamentary Group on physical activity and chairs expert panels for Macmillan Cancer Care and the International Society of Physical Activity.
He supervises doctoral research in areas like physical activity pathways in NHS care, sedentary behavior in office workers, and obesity interventions in adolescents. Current projects explore perioperative exercise programs and long-COVID rehabilitation.
