Julie Nightingale

Professor Julie Nightingale is a Professor of Diagnostic Imaging Education at Sheffield Hallam University, leading the CARe Health Workforce Research group. Previously, she held roles as Professor and Director of Radiography at the University of Salford. Her research focuses on healthcare workforce development, imaging support roles, and advanced practice. She has led multiple nationally funded projects, including the NIHR Allied Health Professions Workforce Research Partnership and the Imaging Support Worker (I-SWAP) study. Recognized as a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (2015) and recipient of the College of Radiographers Silver Medal (2021), she has contributed to textbooks and journals like Radiography (Editor-in-Chief until 2021). Her work emphasizes qualitative and mixed-methods research, addressing workforce diversity, professional competencies, and healthcare system optimization.

Educationally, she has developed postgraduate programs for radiographer advanced practice and led initiatives such as the NHS England Research Internship program. Her current research explores imaging support workforce deployment, retention strategies, and workforce transformation. She supervises postgraduate students in areas like cancer survivorship and professional research culture. Collaborations include projects with NHS England, the Roald Dahl Charity, and Health Education England.

Key contributions include national guideline development (e.g., CT Colonography best practices) and evaluations of degree apprenticeships. Her research highlights the need for innovative workforce models to address healthcare challenges, emphasizing evidence-based practice and interdisciplinary collaboration.
