Kris Lane holds the France V. Scholes Chair in Colonial Latin American History at Tulane University. His research focuses on extractive industries and their socio-environmental impacts in the Andes region, examining commodity chains from colonial-era mining to contemporary resource conflicts.
Research specialties include political economy of mining, environmental consequences of resource extraction, and cross-cultural exchanges in early modern global trade networks. Recent award-winning publications analyze silver mining in Potosí and emerald trade networks.
Teaching covers colonial Latin America, Andean history, piracy, and environmental history. Service includes editorial roles for Colonial Latin American Review and Cambridge Latin American Studies series.
