Jane Mangan serves as the John and Ruth McGee Director of the Dean Rusk International Studies Program and holds the Mary Reynolds Babcock Professorship in History and Latin American Studies at Davidson College. A member of both the History and Latin American Studies departments, she joined the college in 2004 and co-founded the Davidson-in-Peru study abroad program, directing it until 2022. She also previously directed the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies. Dr. Mangan teaches a range of courses including Latin American history surveys (from 1492 to NAFTA), public health and society in Latin America, Latinx history, and interdisciplinary courses such as "Intro to Latin American Studies" and "The Latin American City."
Dr. Mangan's educational background includes a Ph.D. and M.A. from Duke University and a B.A. from Vassar College. Her early interest in International Studies began as an exchange student in Chile during the 1980s, and she has lived in Mexico, Bolivia, and Peru for research and teaching.
Her research focuses on Colonial Latin American History, particularly gender, inequality, and responses to colonialism. She has published two monographs: "Trading Roles: Gender, Ethnicity, and the Urban Economy in Colonial Potosí" (Duke University Press, 2005) and "Transatlantic Obligations: Creating the Bonds of Family in Conquest-Era Peru and Spain" (Oxford University Press, 2016). Current projects include studies of the material culture of colonial Andean cities and the history of Harvard University's Boyden Observatory in 19th-century Arequipa, Peru.
Dr. Mangan's scholarly work has been honored with the Bandelier/Lavrin Book Prize in Colonial Latin American History (RMCLAS) and the Friedrich Katz Prize for the Best Book in Latin American and Caribbean History (American Historical Association), both awarded for "Transatlantic Obligations."
