Klaus Hahlbrock is a renowned academic in biochemistry and molecular biology. He holds the title of Professor Emeritus and has served as an Honorary Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Köln’s Faculty of Natural Sciences since 1984. Previously, he was Director and Head of the Department of Biochemistry at the Max Planck Institute of Plant Breeding Research in Köln (1983–2002) and Vice President of the Max Planck Society (1996–2002). His career includes roles such as Associate Professor (1973), Habilitation (1971, equivalent to Assistant Professor), and Research Assistant at the University of Freiburg, where he earned his PhD in Chemistry (1965).
His research focuses on plant natural products, biosynthetic pathways, enzyme regulation, and phytopathology. He has held leadership positions, including Chairman of the Faculty of Biology at the University of Freiburg (1976–1977, 1979) and leadership in the Max Planck Society as a Scientific Member since 1983.
