Zenk Meinhart was a distinguished academic in plant science and biochemistry. He held the rank of Professor at Ludwig-Maximilian University in Munich, Germany (1980-1999), and served as an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology at Washington University School of Medicine. As a Member and Principal Investigator at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center since 2006, his work focused on plant physiology, biosynthesis pathways, and phytochemical mechanisms.
Dr. Meinhart earned a Doctorate in Plant Science from Ludwig-Maximilian University (1959), an M.S. in Biology from Purdue University (1958), and completed his Habilitation there in 1963. He held professorial positions at Ruhr University Bochum (1968) and Ludwig-Maximilian University (1963 onward).
His research emphasized plant-derived compounds like phytochelatins, alkaloids, and terpenes, with notable contributions to understanding morphine formation in mammals. He pioneered studies on plant hormone interactions and biosynthetic pathways, earning international recognition.
Awardees of major honors include membership in the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina (1983), three honorary doctorates, and prestigious medals from scientific societies. His legacy includes foundational contributions to phytochemistry and plant biology.
