Klaus-Armin Nave is a Professor at the University of Heidelberg and Director of the Department of Neurogenetics at the Max-Planck-Institute of Multidisciplinary Sciences since 2022. Previously, he served as Director at the Max-Planck-Institute of Experimental Medicine in Göttingen (1999–2021) and as a Full Professor of Molecular Biology at the University of Heidelberg (1998–2000).
- Habilitation, Molecular Biology and Genetics, University of Heidelberg (1996)
- Ph.D. in Neuroscience, University of California, San Diego (1987)
- Diploma in Biology, University of Heidelberg (1983)
- Studies in Biology, Physics, and Chemistry, University of Heidelberg (1977)
His research focuses on neuron-glia interactions, myelin biology, and molecular neurobiology, with a strong emphasis on understanding neurodegenerative diseases such as multiple sclerosis. This work spans neuroscience and genetics, particularly the molecular mechanisms of myelin formation and glial cell function.
Dr. Nave has received numerous scientific awards, including:
- ERC Advanced Investigator Grants for AxoGLIA (2010) and MyeliNANO (2015)
- Highly Cited Researcher by Web of Science in 2022 and 2019
- Membership in the German National Academy of Science (Leopoldina, 2014) and EMBO (2004)
- Prestigious prizes including the Sobek Prize (2001) and Felix-Jerusalem-Prize (2004)
He has also held a Visiting Professorship at the University of Glasgow (2018) and been supported by fellowships from DAAD (1983), National Multiple Sclerosis Society (1987), and others throughout his career.
