Kimberly Van Meter serves as Associate Professor of Geography in the Department of Geography within Pennsylvania State University's College of Earth and Mineral Sciences. She holds dual associate faculty appointments at the Earth and Environmental Systems Institute (EESI) and Institute for Computational and Data Sciences (ICDS), and serves as Associate Director of Riparia.
Her research centers on human impacts on water systems across diverse landscapes, with primary focus areas including legacy nutrient accumulation in agricultural ecosystems, climate change effects on Great Lakes coastal wetlands, and wetland restoration for nutrient removal. Current projects include NASA-funded wetland restoration modeling, Chesapeake Bay watershed dam infrastructure studies, and analysis of social-environmental tradeoffs in water quality management. Her lab employs remote sensing, large-scale data analysis, and process-based modeling to examine climate-land use interactions.
Dr. Van Meter actively recruits graduate students for research in water quality, wetlands biogeochemistry, and environmental modeling. Her lab emphasizes cross-scale analysis of human-water interactions from local agricultural systems to global watersheds. Key initiatives include quantifying time trajectories for water quality improvement and assessing dam removal impacts on downstream ecosystems.
