He holds a Ph.D. in Theology from the University of Notre Dame (1995), an MTS in Biblical Studies from Harvard Divinity School (1990), and a BA in Liberal Arts from St. John's College (1988). Notable works include analyses of St. Augustine, apocalyptic imagery in zombie media, and the theological underpinnings of works like The Walking Dead and Flannery O'Connor's fiction.
Professor Paffenroth is a prolific author of both academic and creative works. His zombie novels, such as the Dying to Live series, have been translated internationally and recognized with awards like the Bram Stoker Award. He has also edited volumes on Augustine's engagement with science, philosophy, and world religions. His research emphasizes how ancient Christian thought resonates in contemporary cultural expressions, from horror to science fiction.
Key honors include the Bram Stoker Award (2006), Foreword Magazine's Silver Medal (2007), and speaking engagements through the New York Council for the Humanities (2003–2005). His interdisciplinary approach to faith and culture has positioned him as a leading voice in religious studies and pop culture analysis.
