Richard A. Rosengarten is an Associate Professor of Religion and Literature at the University of Chicago Divinity School, serving as Director of Doctoral Studies and affiliated with The College. He holds MA and PhD degrees from the University of Chicago. His research explores the intersection of religious thought with Enlightenment-era literary forms, examining how novels, satire, autobiography, and essays mediate theological concepts across historical periods. Notable works include a study analyzing Henry Fielding through Augustine's Confessions and Faulkner's Absalom, Absalom!, and a forthcoming book comparing Catholic sacramental theology in Flannery O'Connor's fiction, Frida Kahlo's retablos, and Simone Weil's essays. Rosengarten has held significant administrative roles including Dean of Students (1991-2000), Dean of the Divinity School (2000-2010, 2015-17), and leadership positions in the Council on the Graduate Study of Religion. He currently serves as Associate Editor of Literature and Theology.
