Kim Knibbe is an Associate Professor in the Department of Comparative Study of Religion at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Religion, Culture and Society. Her research focuses on the intersection of religion, secularity, gender, and sexuality, with a particular interest in how individuals navigate 'given' versus 'human-made' constructs. She has held roles such as Chair of the National Research School for Theology and Religious Studies (NOSTER) since 2019 and Board Member of the Catharina Halkes Fonds for Gender and Religion Research since 2016.
Her work combines ethnographic methods to explore topics like Pentecostal healing practices, reverse mission dynamics, and the role of religion in contemporary Dutch society. She has received the KNAW Wetenschapsfonds Gewaardeerd! award in 2021 for her contributions to communicating research. Her recent publications address transnational religion, post-secular theory, and gendered spirituality, reflecting her commitment to interdisciplinary and intersectional approaches.
Knibbe’s activities include academic presentations, organizing conferences, and hosting visiting scholars. Her research also engages with global South-North dynamics, particularly through studies of Nigerian Pentecostal churches in Europe and the impact of cultural diversity on religious practices.
