Erin Wilson is a Professor of Politics and Religion at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Religion, Culture and Society. She holds a PhD from the University of Queensland (2008). Her research bridges religious studies, international relations, and philosophy, focusing on religion's role in global politics, secularism, and humanitarian crises. She developed the 'relational dialogism' model to analyze religion's influence on international relations.
Wilson's work emphasizes practical policy relevance for politicians and policymakers. She is co-editor of The Refugee Crisis and Religion and former director of the Centre for Religion, Conflict and the Public Domain. She is a member of the Young Academy Groningen and co-chair of the Transatlantic Policy Network on Religion and Diplomacy.
Her research interests include religion's intersection with diplomacy, refugee policy, climate change ethics, and gender equality. Notable contributions include policy briefs on religious freedom for minority communities and essays on post-secular frameworks for addressing displacement crises. Wilson's blog The Religion Factor critiques secular narratives and explores religion's contemporary role in global issues.
She has received the KNAW Wetenschapsfonds Gewaardeerd Prize (2021) and was named Lecturer of the Year at her faculty. Her interdisciplinary approach integrates spiritual and secular dimensions of social transformation, particularly in development contexts and global justice.
