Dr. Brenda Bartelink is an Assistant Professor and Senior Researcher affiliated with the University of Groningen's Faculty of Religion, Culture and Society and Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences. She holds dual appointments in the Comparative Study of Religion department and the Pedagogy department (History and Philosophy of Education). Her work bridges academia and societal impact, focusing on intersections of religion, gender, and secularity. She conducts ethnographic research across Western Europe and Sub-Saharan Africa, examining themes like religious diversity in urban settings, faith-based organizations, and gender empowerment.
Her research projects include studies on religious actors in The Hague, health practices in African-initiated churches, and global responses to harmful cultural practices. She applies creative methodologies, including art-based approaches, and collaborates with NGOs on applied research. Teaching responsibilities include courses on qualitative methods, religion-gender dynamics, and conflict transformation leadership programs.
Bartelink's publications span topics from sexual nationalism in Dutch cities to ethical dilemmas in foster care. Her work emphasizes empowering marginalized communities through academic knowledge. She supervises MA/PhD theses on religion, secularity, and gender, and maintains a fellowship at the Centre for Religion, Conflict and the Public Domain.
