Evelyn Bush is an Associate Professor of Sociology at Fordham University’s Sociology and Anthropology Department. Her research focuses on the interplay between religion and secular institutions, including the United Nations, U.S. Department of State, and professional sports leagues like the NFL. She examines how religious actors navigate secular bureaucracies and explores the dehumanizing effects of hyper-rationalization in professional sports.

Research Interests: Dr. Bush studies religion’s interaction with social movements, culture, and institutions. Recent work analyzes NFL athletes’ experiences and the role of religious ministries in mitigating institutional pressures. She has also investigated how secular institutions shape religious actors’ influence in human rights advocacy.
Projects:
- 2017/2018 Sabbatical: Collected data on religion’s impact on NFL athletes’ lives and careers.
- Collaborated on the “Religious NGOs at the United Nations” project, culminating in the book Religion, NGOs and the United Nations.
Publications: Her work spans religion, international institutions, and methodology challenges in studying faith. Recent publications address religious NGOs’ roles at the UN and conceptual frameworks for defining religious organizations.
Labs/Teams: Engaged in interdisciplinary collaborations, including fieldwork in professional sports and quantitative studies on transnational religion.
