Kevin Hoth is a Lecturer in Critical Media Practices at the University of Colorado Boulder, where he teaches CMDP3510-003 - Critical Media Practices Workshop II. With over two decades of experience in creative photography, his work bridges digital art, photography, video, and design, exploring the psychological and emotional dimensions of visual communication.
Hoth's artistic practice centers on experimental approaches to photography that investigate trauma, healing, time perception, and our relationship with images. His work often incorporates physical manipulation of photographic media, particularly instant film, to create new visual languages that address emotional triggers and psychological responses. Key themes include the transformative power of trauma, the fragmented nature of contemporary attention, and the ritualistic aspects of image-making. His techniques range from edible image printing to mirror reflections and Polaroid shredding.
His major projects reveal a consistent exploration of how images affect us psychologically. Through innovative techniques, Hoth creates works that challenge conventional viewing experiences and invite deeper engagement with visual content. His practice demonstrates how photographic processes can serve as therapeutic tools for processing trauma and understanding time, often drawing from personal experiences with family health crises.
