Matthew Gamber serves as Associate Professor of Photography and New Media and Program Coordinator for Visual Arts (Studio) in the Department of Visual Arts at the College of the Holy Cross. His work critically examines archival practices and experimental photography through the lens of technological evolution and artistic intervention.
His educational foundation includes an M.F.A. from Tufts University, informing his interdisciplinary approach that bridges historical photographic techniques with contemporary digital media.
Gamber's research manifests in dual trajectories: material explorations of vintage photographs (as in Dead Ringer) and conceptual fusions of scientific principles with visual language (exemplified by Matter). This work consistently interrogates how photographic processes mediate our perception of time, landscape, and material reality, often employing experimental techniques that challenge conventional documentary frameworks.
His recent publications demonstrate a concentrated focus on landscape recontextualization and archival reactivation:
- Dead Ringer (2024) investigates divergent narratives within vintage photographic collections
- Matter (2014) reimagines scientific communication through photographic interpretation
Professional recognition includes:
- Individual Photographer's Fellowship (Aaron Siskind Foundation)
- Artist's Resource Trust Grant (Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation)
- Traveling Fellowship (School of the Museum of Fine Arts)
- Blanche E. Colman Award
Gamber maintains active exhibition momentum with solo shows like The Chisel & The Pencil (2024) and collaborative projects including Living Marble (2022), while his photographic practice gains critical visibility through features in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Surface Magazine. His pedagogical leadership extends through courses in Photography, Digital Filmmaking, and Studio Concentration Seminar.
