Eli Craven is an Associate Professor of Photography and related media in the Patti & Rusty Rueff School of Design, Art, and Performance at Purdue University. Based in Lafayette, Indiana, Craven holds an MFA from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he was a Block Grant Fellow. Prior to joining Purdue in 2019, he served as adjunct faculty at both Boise State University and the University of Illinois.
Craven's artistic practice centers on the critical investigation of images and their relationship to ideologies of sexuality, desire, and death. His work conceptually engages with photographic images—both found and original—through sculptural and digital interventions that re-evaluate the physical and psychological potential of pictures. Working across photography, sculpture, video, and collage, Craven creates narratives that explore the familiar to the bizarre, with particular attention to the erotic nature of images.
His research demonstrates a consistent trajectory exploring how images communicate and trigger emotions, with recent work focusing on themes of death, ritual, secret societies, and the desire to see the unknown. Craven's approach has evolved from traditional photography to increasingly sculptural and three-dimensional forms, often incorporating woodwork elements and physical interventions that transform the viewing experience.
