Kevin Carey serves as an Associate Professor and Coordinator of Creative Writing in the Department of English at Salem State University. He teaches diverse courses including Creative Writing Workshop, Scriptwriting, Literature and Film, and thesis/capstone seminars for graduate and undergraduate students.
His creative practice spans multiple disciplines with a focus on narrative forms. Carey produces literary fiction, poetry, screenplays, and experimental documentaries, often exploring urban landscapes, social inequality, and human resilience. His work demonstrates particular strength in character-driven storytelling across contemporary and historical settings.
Analysis of Carey's publications reveals an evolving trajectory from literary short fiction toward genre experimentation. Early works like The One Fifteen to Penn Station examine urban isolation, while recent projects include crime novels (Murder in the Marsh) and middle-grade fiction (Junior Miles and the Junkman). His documentary work with poets complements his written output through visual storytelling.

Through ENL 505 Creative Writing Thesis and ENL 510 Portfolio Seminar, Carey mentors emerging writers in manuscript development. His film productions All That Lies Between Us and Unburying Malcolm Miller represent collaborative creative partnerships extending his pedagogical approach into documentary practice.
