Keith N. Hampton is a Professor in the Department of Media & Information at Michigan State University (MSU), serving as Director of Academic Research at the Quello Center and Affiliate Faculty in the Department of Sociology and the Canadian Studies Center. He holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in Sociology from the University of Toronto and a B.A. (Hons.) in Sociology from the University of Calgary. Previously, he was Endowed Professor in Communication and Public Policy at Rutgers University and held roles at the University of Pennsylvania and MIT.
Hampton’s research focuses on digital technologies, social networks, democratic engagement, and urban environments. His work bridges computational communication, human-centered design, political communication, and policy governance. He has contributed to understanding the digital divide in Detroit, rural student outcomes, and social media’s psychological impacts.
Awarded the 2022 William F. Ogburn Career Achievement Award from the American Sociological Association, Hampton’s honors include the Brandt Fellowship and Merit Networks’ Innovation Award. His research emphasizes the societal implications of technology, including digital access disparities and media effects on mental health.
He directs the Quello Center and collaborates with interdisciplinary teams, such as the Health and Risk Communication Center. His work combines theoretical frameworks with empirical studies, addressing real-world challenges like educational inequality and community resilience.
